The 40tude London SUP Marathon 2013

The inaugural 40tude London SUP Marathon took place, successfully, on Saturday 22 June 2013. This was the first event of its kind; a long distance (approximately 26 mile) mass paddle on the Thames from Shepperton to Putney. The course combined tidal and non-tidal sections of the river passing through 3 locks and under 14 bridges and taking in picturesque sights such as Hampton Court, Syon House, Kew Gardens, Ham House and Richmond Hill.

We did it!

25 participants started and 25 participants finished - alive, safe, well... and very happy! Plus we had 15 or so marshals, which means a total of 40 paddlers completed London's first ever SUP Marathon - 26 miles from Shepperton to Putney - in about 8h30!

Upon last count (24 June), our paddlers had raised a total of £33,965.90 for the charity, but it seems donations are still flowing in!  Once all the funds are in, we expect the SUP Marathon to have raised around £45,000, maybe even £50,000! We will keep this figure updated here.

The money raised is going to fund the FLEX research project.  The project is becoming very exciting and the money we have raised through SUP will help take the project to the next phase, which is to test the new surgical technique in human patients. This will be a major milestone. The doctors believe that, if successful, FLEX will mean that around 4,000 cancer patients each year in the UK, who would normally have to have major colon surgery, will instead be able to have this much more simple and minimally invasive surgery. This should avoid some of the risks and complications of major surgery, as well as avoid the long term bowel upset that they may otherwise experience, and their recovery time and time spent in hospital should be greatly reduced.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the London SUP Marathon possible: organisers, volunteers, marshals, participants and of course all our wonderful sponsors and supporters...
  • Firstly, special thanks to our headline sponsors - Skillcapital and Serco Consulting - who are sponsoring our entire 2013 series of Momentum events.
  • All the many people who supported the SUP Marathon participants by making generous donations to St Mark's, see www.bmycharity.com/momentum
  • Roar Muesli, who provided a hearty porridge breakfast to fuel the paddlers at the start of the day.
  • Thames Court Inn, Shepperton, who provided the breakfast briefing venue and supplemented the Roar porridge with hot tea and coffee, pastries, fruit, etc.
  • The Anglers, Walton - the wonderful pub that produced delicious sausage rolls, shortbread biscuits and hot tea and coffee for the paddlers 'elevenses' rest stop.
  • The Bell Inn, Hampton - another wonderful pub that provided hot drinks, brownies and flapjacks to keep the paddlers going until a late lunch in Kingston.
  • Byron - who served a choice of their superb classic, cheese and bacon, and veggie burgers to the paddlers for lunch from the Byron Van. They went down a treat!
  • Kingston Rowing Club - who provided the venue for our Byron lunch and access to club facilities, pontoon, and sheltered us when a nasty squall came in!
  • Your Frontier - who recorded the challenge on camera and are currently producing a short film.

Finally, enormous thanks goes to our event delivery partner, Active360, the ASI-accredited SUP specialists, who worked tirelessly with the 40tude event team to turn what was once just a crazy idea into a reality!
